As the countdown to Apple's 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference continues, anticipation is building for what could be one of the most significant iOS updates to date. Reports suggest that iOS 18, the upcoming mobile operating system from Apple, will introduce a plethora of new AI-driven features, with some potentially running directly on the device. From innovative AI functionalities to the addition of RCS support, here's a glimpse of what we know so far about the highly anticipated iOS 18 update.

Siri & Safari: AI Unleashed for Next-Level Experiences!

Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that iOS 18 will introduce a host of innovative AI-driven features, although specifics have yet to be disclosed. However, according to a recent report from Apple Insider, it appears that the primary emphasis will be on enhancing Siri, the iPhone's default voice assistant.

It appears that Siri is gearing up to take on new capabilities within the Messages app. Reports from Bloomberg suggest that the voice assistant may soon gain the ability to analyze and summarize text messages. Additionally, there are indications that Siri could also offer auto-completion suggestions for text within Messages, handle more intricate queries, and integrate more seamlessly with the Shortcuts app for streamlining complex tasks.

Recent research papers released by Apple suggest that the upcoming AI features will be executed directly on the device, rather than relying solely on cloud-based processing. The reports indicate that Ajax, the AI system developed by Apple, will utilize on-device processing to generate straightforward responses. However, for more complex requests such as image generation, there may be instances where cloud servers are utilized. Apple's purported discussions with both Google and OpenAI hint at potential partnerships to leverage these AI capabilities, although the final decision remains undisclosed.

RCS Support Capability:

After years of exclusively relying on its proprietary iMessage platform, Apple made a significant announcement earlier this year regarding its plans to adopt the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol with the release of iOS 18. This decision marks a departure from the company's previous stance and opens up new possibilities for iPhone users. With RCS support, iPhone users will soon have the ability to communicate seamlessly with their friends who use Android devices, enabling features like high-quality video sharing and enhancing the overall messaging experience across different platforms.

Visual revamp:

There are rumours circulating that iOS 18 could draw inspiration from visionOS, the software behind the Apple Vision Pro. If these speculations hold true, we might witness various design tweaks, such as the adoption of circular icons and translucent user interfaces that seamlessly integrate with the operating system. Additionally, a revamped control centre could be on the horizon, offering users a refreshed and more intuitive interface for managing their device settings.

The forthcoming update is rumoured to introduce a range of new customization features, offering users greater control over their home screen layout. Among these anticipated features are enhanced options for arranging app icons, providing users with more flexibility to organize their apps according to their preferences. Additionally, users may gain the ability to create blank spaces, rows, and columns directly on the home screen, allowing for a more personalized and tailored user experience.

Apple has not officially announced the list of iPhones that will receive the iOS 18 update. However, reports suggest that any iPhone model released after the iPhone 11 will likely be eligible for the update. This includes the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15 series, as well as the iPhone SE (3rd generation).

The official unveiling of the iOS 18 update is expected to take place at the WWDC 2024 event on June 10. Until then, iPhone users will have to wait patiently to discover the new features and improvements that Apple has in store for them.
